*Anyone who spends Easter in Villach can look forward to a varied programme with numerous customs, culinary delights and atmospheric festivities. Holy Week is particularly eventful and absolutely worth seeing for our visiting guests too.*

**Palm Sunday**

Easter in Villach traditionally begins with Palm Sunday. Children carry willow catkin branches bound into a broom to church to be blessed. The Palmbuschen, as they are colloquially called, are hung with sweets and pretzels for the children, which may be eaten after the mass. The blessed branches are meant to be stuck into the soil of fields and gardens and to protect against misfortune in the year ahead. Numerous blessings take place in Villach as well.

**Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the Fleischweihe**

On Maundy Thursday people traditionally go without meat. Instead, Carinthian households have spinach with Rösterdäpfel and a fried egg on the lunch table. Good Friday is the last day of fasting before the Easter feast. Even so, preparations are in full swing. Eggs are dyed, Reindling is baked and sausages are boiled. On Holy Saturday all the delicacies are packed into a basket and taken to church for the so-called “Fleischweihe”. This takes place in many Villach churches at different times.

**Easter fire and Easter Sunday**

On the night before Sunday you can visit the Easter fire at various locations in Villach. This is an annual spectacle for young and old. On Easter Sunday the children then look for their Easter nest, and numerous games such as ball throwing or ball striking are on the programme.

**Ostermarkt in Villach**

The traditional Ostermarkt in Villach takes place from 30 March to 08 April 2023. A colourful variety of products and dishes awaits you – alongside Easter goods such as blessing baskets, candles and painted porcelain eggs there are also plenty of delicacies such as Osterschinken, Reindling & Krainer.
