The Hauptplatz dates from the 12th century and has been a pedestrian zone since 1988. It is a few minutes’ walk there from the apartment. You can travel here without a car. The main station is around 13 minutes on foot; with luggage you take the bus, a taxi or the station shuttle, which can be booked by 18:00 on the previous day. Once here you need nothing more than comfortable shoes. The Villacher Altstadtspaziergang leads in 45 to 90 minutes across the Hauptplatz, through the arcaded courtyards and on to the Stadtpfarrkirche St. Jakob with Carinthia’s tallest church tower. The leaflet for it is available free of charge at the tourist information office, as are guided tours with Austria Guides. In the evening the programme starts just around the corner. Inns serving Carinthian cuisine, cafés on the Hauptplatz and bars on the Drava are all within walking distance. Founded in 1873, it is one of the oldest municipal museums in Austria. In the courtyard stand a Roman collection of stonework and a piece of the medieval town wall. Anyone who wants to get higher up climbs the Stadtpfarrturm. At 94 metres it is the tallest church tower in Carinthia, and from the top the city lies in front of the Karawanken. The showroom in the Burg is open free of charge all year round. Spread across the year, Villach has plenty in the calendar. The Villacher Kirchtag is Austria’s largest folk festival, the European Bike Week runs on the Faaker See, and then there are the Villacher Fasching, the K3 Film Festival in December and open airs at the Burgarena Finkenstein. And if two days really are meant to be enough: the boat trips on the Drava start in the city, the Ossiacher See is 15 minutes away by car, and it is not far to the Italian or the Slovenian border.
