In an apartment you have breakfast whenever you like, and nobody clears the dining room at ten. You make the coffee yourself and plan the rest of the day as you go. The old town starts a few minutes’ walk from the house. On the Hauptplatz, which dates from the 12th century, you sit in a café, the inns serve Kärntner Kasnudeln, and on the Drava there are bars for the late evening. You only need to reserve where it gets busy. Ten minutes away by car is the Kärntentherme in Warmbad-Villach, with thermal pools between 32 and 34 degrees. The sauna area is reserved for guests aged 16 and over and is therefore the quietest part of the building. Anyone arriving in the evening pays less from 17:00. For a special evening you drive up to Burg Landskron. The fine-dining restaurant Kronensaal serves from 18:30, on Thursdays in season as a seven-course menu by candlelight. At 94 metres its tower is the tallest in Carinthia. The leaflet for it is available free of charge at the tourist information office. Culturally, Villach has more on its programme than a town of this size would suggest. The Museum der Stadt Villach shows the history of the city on the Drava on three floors, in December the K3 Film Festival runs, and in summer the Carinthische Sommer plays across the region. On the Faaker See stands the Zitrusgarten with around 280 varieties of citrus under glass. Tours run hourly, and afterwards there is a tasting with limoncello and jams. In winter the trees blossom and you have the greenhouses almost to yourself. From May to October the boat service on the Ossiacher See calls at nine landing stages. A complete round trip takes a good two hours; with the day ticket you get off wherever you like.
